Unimog Canada Press Release
Stuttgart/Gaggenau, April,
2002
The high-mobility Unimog model series U 3000, U 4000 and U 5000 have been newly
developed for difficult all-terrain operations where roads and tracks are completely
absent.
They are scheduled to start leaving the production line at the new Unimog production
location in Wörth in autumn 2002. These new series models are the successors
to the Unimog chassis U 1550 L, U 2150 L and U 2450 L, which will still be produced
at the Unimog plant in Gaggenau until mid-year.
The Unimog product division of DaimlerChrysler AG will present the new all-wheel
drive vehicles to the general public for the first time at the IAA Commercial
Vehicle Show from September 12 - 19, 2002.
Thanks to their outstanding off-road capabilities the
new Unimog series are eminently suitable for operations in the most difficult
terrain or for safety operations around the world. The main areas of use for
the new Unimog will therefore be firefighting – particularly
forest fires - disaster aid, as basic chassis for expedition
vehicles, non-civilian applications and servicing and maintenance work in locations
where access is difficult. They therefore ideally complement the Unimog
model series U 300 to U 500 presented in spring 2000, which are mainly intended
as implement carriers for public sector applications, for municipal services,
in the construction and energy sectors and in internal company transport.
The new heavy-duty all-terrain Unimog chassis U 3000 to U 5000 combine traditional
Unimog characteristics such as solidity, robustness, durability, reliability
and an almost legendary all-wheel-drive concept with the most up-to-date engine
and transmission technology, as well as state-of-the-art ergonomics. Their great
operational reliability contributes more than ever before to a superior level
of overall cost-effectiveness with reduced maintenance costs and a high resale
value.
The new all-terrain Unimog models owe their torsional flexibility to a flexible
ladder-type frame consisting of two U-section side members with welded tubular
cross-members. Portal axles at front and rear with differential locks,
hub drives, control arms, a torque tube, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers
and front and rear stabilizers are standard features for the series. The all-steel
cab with a roof hatch is also available as a crew cab. Like the engine, transmission,
platform and body it has a three-point mounting and therefore follows every movement
of the vehicle.
The new Unimog series U 3000 to U 5000 are designed for a gross vehicle weight
of up to 12.5 tonnes. They are equipped with low-emission Euro 3 engines with
an output range from 110 kW (150 hp) to 160 kW (218 hp). A Mercedes-Benz transmission
with electro-pneumatic shift (EPS), pneumatically selectable all-wheel drive
and an integral transfer case provides eight forward and six reverse gears, and
also allows additional working gears to be installed if required. A single-circuit
hydraulic system for implement operation is also available on request. The new
Unimog models have pneumatic-hydraulic, dual-circuit disc brakes on all four
wheels as standard, as well as dis-engageable 4 channel ABS.
